Apple may offer buyback schemes for iPad Air, iPad mini

Apple will sell its two new tablet models — Apple iPad Air and Apple iPad mini with retina display — in India for Rs 35,900 and Rs 28,900, respectively, starting December 7, the company's distributor Ingram Micro said on Monday. A senior executive with an Apple trade partner in India said the US major has plans to run promotional activities around the new iPad models in India, including buyback schemes on old iPads and tablets, cash-back offer and EMI schemes, following the success of a similar strategy adopted for the iPhone in the country, the world's fastest growing market for smartphones.

 

As part of its moves to gain market share, Apple could announce a "price cut on the older iPad mini model in the sub-Rs 20,000 segment to drive volume," retail chain PlanetM Chief Executive Sanjay Karwa said. Another senior executive who also works at an Apple trade partner said the strategy is to expand distribution of iPads from just a handful of the Apple stores and large multi-brand retailers to the entire universe of cellphone retail stores where iPhones are sold. "In fact, Apple, with its distributors, is closely working with all the cellphone retailers to set up separate iPad corners wherever possible and is also appointing shop-floor promotional staff," he said.

 

The launch of the new models comes within a month of their global launch as the Cupertino based company moves to shore up market share significantly in the fast growing Indian tablet space where it has not been able to make much headway so far. With this, Apple will have a portfolio of five models in the tablet segment. Apple has historically maintained its premium positioning even for iPads. It has been selling iPads from Rs 21,900 onwards; Samsung Galaxy Tabs are available upwards of Rs 12,000.

 

As per latest data (April-June 2013) from market tracker CMR India, Samsung leads the Indian tablet market by shipping with 21.2% share, followed by Datawind with 12.5% (excludes shipment of Aakash tablets) and Micromax at 9.7%. Trade estimates suggest Apple has some 6-7% share of the tablet market in India, though this could not be independently verified.

Micromax Canvas Ego A113 launched, available online for Rs 12999

The 4.7 inch display device comes with a quad core processor and Android Jelly Bean 4.1 operating system

Mobile phone brand Micromax has announced yet another android smartphone under its Micromax Canvas smartphone range, called the Canvas Ego A113. The Canvas Ego offers utility and fun to users with high performance at a smaller size.

It is easier to carry around as compared to conventional 5 inch devices. The device is available online through Snapdeal and will be making its way to other online and retail stores in the days to come.

The Canvas Ego A113 android smartphone features a 4.7 inch display with 800 x 480 pixel native resolution and capacitive touch input. The device is based on a Mediatek quad core processor running at 1.2 GHz, along with 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB onboard storage, of which 2.4 GB would be available to users. Users will have the option to increase storage by another 32 GB with the use of micro SD cards. The battery on the device has been rated at 2000 mAh and is likely to power the device for 1-2 days of use.

The operating system offered is Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 along with Micromax's custom user interface layer on top. There is an 8 megapixel camera at the back along with an LED flash while there is also a front facing camera for video calling, but sadly the rear camera would not be capable of high definition video recording.

Apart from having a smaller display size that would make the device a bit easier to carry the Micromax Canvas Ego fails to justify its existence among the numerous other devices available from Micromax, itself carrying similar specifications as well as price tag of Rs 12,999.

Lumia 520: Nokia's most affordable Windows 8 Phone available in India

Expanding its Lumia portfolio, Finnish handset maker Nokia on Wednesday launched two new mobile phones including a Windows 8 phone priced at Rs 10,500.

Lumia 520, Nokia's most affordable Windows Phone 8 smartphone, with the same digital camera lenses as on Lumia 920, will be available in the market within a week.

Lumia 720, which has a high-end camera, will be available by Mid-April. The company did not disclose the price of Lumia 720 but said it will be priced at around 249 euro, excluding taxes.

Nokia Lumia 520 is the most cheapest phone from the Nokia’s cheap phone plans in the Lumia series. Micromax is offering low and mid range phones and the most important factor is that the phones are appealing, have good look and comes in a affordable price. This effort from  Micromax has now been recognized to give tough competition to Karbonn mobiles, Samsung Mid range phones and also it is now leading the Nokia phones.

The Nokia Smartphone Lumia 520 comes with a 4-inch capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. Nokia Lumia 520 is powered by 1 GHz Dual-core snapdragon S4 with a 512 MB RAM. 

The Nokia Lumia 520 avails a 8 Gb internal memory which can be expanded upto 64 GB and is mounted with a 5 MP rear camera with 4X digital zoom and is without flash.

Swissvoice launches 5 mobile phones in India

Swiss mobile phone firm Swissvoice launched five mobile phones in the price range of Rs 2,999 to Rs 5,999 thus making its grand entry to the Indian market.

“Initially, we will target the youth segment in the tier II and III cities in northern India. From next month, we will launch the handsets in southern states,” Swissvoice India Director Dollar Gulati said.

The European company launched the handset through its Indian subsidiary Swissvoice India. The Swiss company aims to sell around 30,000 handsets every month in the hugely crowded Indian handset market. Besides the internationla giants like Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and LG, in the recent past Indian market has seen local competitors in Spice, Micromax, Lemon, Lava, Karbonn and Zen mobile phones.
