Google unveils Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P smartphones

After weeks of rumors and speculations, Google has unveiled two Nexus smartphones at the same time, one featuring a 5.2-inch display and the other sporting a 5.7-inch screen, the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P - along with the final version of Android Marshmallow (6.0).

Google will sell both as unlocked phones, which means they can be purchased directly from Google or a partner retailer and used at a wide variety of wireless carriers. Both phones will also be compatible with Google's Project Fi WiFi service, and will utilize Android's Marshmallow operating system and fingerprint technology.

The 12.3-megapixel camera on Huawei’s Nexus 6P in particular carries the best camera that Google has ever included in a Nexus device. The device’s 8-megapixel front-facing camera can make pictures in HDR+ mode.

The other new flagship Nexus phone is the 5.2-inch 5X, an LG-built device that starts at $379.

Both the Nexus 6P and 5X come with the new Nexus Imprint, a fingerprint reader that can scan a print — instead of requiring a user to enter a password — in less than 600 milliseconds, Burke said. The two phones also have a USB "Type-C" port, which Burke said can charge the phones twice as fast as an Apple iPhone 6 Plus.

The pair of Nexuses also both run on Google's Android Marshmallow operating system, which Google previewed at its I/O developer conference in May. The update will include the revamped mobile payment service Android Pay, a beefed-up version of the Google Now voice assistant and more new features. Burke also showed off a new smart "doze" mode that puts certain apps on hold when you haven't touched your phone in a while, a feature designed to further extend battery life.

The Nexus phones also feature better cameras than previous models, matching similar upgrades that Apple just made to its iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

Google Inc. is promising the Nexus 6P will be able to be fully charged in half the time that it takes the iPhone 6s Plus.

The Nexus 6P has a 5.7-inch screen, slightly larger than the iPhone 6s Plus. The Nexus 5X has a 5.2-inch screen.

The Nexus 6P which comes in frost white, aluminium, and graphite, also features:
  • Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor
  • 6.27-inch WQHD display
  • 3450mAh battery
  • Dual front-facing speakers

The Nexus 5X, which is built by LG, is an update to the "iconic" Nexus 5 Google said -- offering high performance but in a lower cost. It features a 64-bit processor, with a 1.55 micron camera, which has a laser-assisted autofocus, dual flash and can record in 4K, a Nexus Imprint fingerprint sensor and USB Type-C charging port.

The Nexus 5X also features:
  • 2,700 mAh battery
  • 5.2-inch, 1080P display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor
  • 2GB RAM
