Maxx launches two new feature phones

The Super MX424 comes loaded with a 2200 mAh battery that gives around 11-17 hours of talktime while the other phone, Sleek MX464 is a feature-rich dual SIM phone.

After manufacturing of mobile phone batteries and chargers, MAXX Group is now all set to start handsets manufacturing in India by March 2012.

According to Ajjay Agarwal, MAXX chairman and managing director, the company will start manufacturing of handsets in India by March 2012 at its Haridwar facility located in the state of Uttarakhand.

“We are at a stage of finalization of the capital goods for the manufacturing of handsets. Initially, every month 100,000 phones will be manufactured here,” Agarwal told Cyber Media News on the sidelines of the company’s new product launch in Mumbai today.

The new series of Khamoshhh… comprise two handsets – a bar phone, MAXX MX401, and a QWERTY handset, MAXX MQ601, priced at Rs.. 2833 and Rs.. 2970 respectively.

For the handset manufacturing, the company will raise funds through internal accruals and bank loans, Agarwal informed. The handset manufacturing will start from its second unit located in the same campus in Haridwar. He added that the second unit is also based in Haridwar due to the tax benefits offered in the state of Uttarakhand.

“We are strongly focusing on developing and manufacturing technology products that are value for money to customers. Also we are strongly focusing on after-sales support to customers,” he stressed.

Presently, the group is bringing handsets to India market from China under a contractual manufacturing from a local vendor.

However, MAXX has overall strength of 3500 people here with a dedicated team of 550 people including 40 technical and engineering staffs who are involved in the mobile phone business.

MAXX Group was started in 2004 and a year later it started its first battery and charger manufacturing unit in Haridwar. During the year, the group was successful in generating Rs.. 5 crore sales revenues.

The Haridwar unit has an installed capacity of making 8.8 crore units of batteries and 3.25 crore units of chargers annually.

From Rs.. 5 crore sales revenues in 2005-06, the group’s sales jumped to Rs.. 52 crore in 2007-08 as it undertook sale of accessories. Two years later, the group formed MAXX Moblink Private Limited (MMPL) for research and development as well as marketing and distributions of mobile handsets.

During 2008-09, it posted total sales revenues of Rs.. 170 crore which includes Rs.. 18 crore mobile handset sales and Rs.. 152 crore accessories business. Besides, it established its second factory in Mumbai at SPEEZ for manufacturing of batteries and chargers for exports.

While the MAXX mobile brand is quite popular in the market with substantial number of customers in the low-mid range price segments, Agarwal informed that the group is developing products across platforms including Android and it will launch new Android-based models in the next quarter.

However, in terms of demands, Agarwal pointed out that there’s high demand of music phones, and, as a result close to 95 per cent handsets of MAXX comes with memory cards embedded with audio and video music content under a partnership with Hungama.com.

The group offers 3 months' free subscription to users for downloading music content.

With strong focus on India market, the group has been successful in reporting 20-25 per cent growth year on year. “We are targeting a 6 million unit sales of mobile phones with revenues around Rs.. 800 crore for fiscal 2011-12,” Agarwal said.

Apple’s iPhone 4 launched in India

Apple released its iPhone 4 in India on 27th May. Two major Indian telecom firms launched the iPhone 4 by means of a pricing plan that allows consumers to pick up the charge of the smart phone in monthly credits in two-year time. Indian cellular phone group Aircel charges 34,500 rupees ($764) for the iPhone 4 with a capacity of 16 GB and 32 GB version costs 40,900 rupees. Though many companies have tried to redraft the feature and application of the iPhone 4, Airtel CEO (West Bengal and Orissa) PD Sharma had claimed, "iPhone 4 will stand out for its original applications and cater to the middle segment as well, with attractive pricing which will not create a pinch both in the long and short term".

With the news making reverberations in the contours of the market, large number of tech savvy groups were seen gazing at the seamless beauty of iPhone 4, despite of its high end prices for Rs 34,500 for the 16GB model and Rs 40,900 for the 32GB model.

In order to take benefit from the hoopla surrounding iPhone 4, Airtel and Aircel are offering lucrative schemes to the customers. Confirming the strategic approach adopted by telecom companies in India to beat the neck to neck competition, P. D. Indian Railways to launch mobile phone ticketing app

Indian Railways has announced they are developing a mobile ticketing application for mobile phones.

The application will be available to download onto a mobile phone and tickets will be sent by text message.

Anyone using the app would have to carry proof of identification but will no longer have to queue for tickets at stations.

Passengers in rural areas of India often have to purchase tickets from a travel agency, where they can often be sold at higher prices.

This new form of ticket purchasing could make the railways much more accessible to those who live in rural areas, away from a main station where tickets aren’t sold.

Individuals will need to be registered on the IRCTC’s Online Passenger Reservation System in order to reserve tickets.

Indian Railways say they are not looking to increase ticket prices.

HTC Incredible S Review

Expensive, but the best Android smartphone in the market until the dual-cores come along.

The HTC Incredible S wasn't love at first sight for me. That may be because it is just another 'droid, or it is simply down to the horrible name. Nokia may bore you to death with robotic naming convention, but on the other hand, HTC blurs the line between creativity and hilarity with phones such as HTC Hero, Trophy, Rider, Flyer, Dream and Chacha. However, I can't seem to get my hands off this phone - banal nomenclature notwithstanding. The device may not look stunning, but it blends subtlety with out-of-the-box design cues. While it certainly can't beat Nokia N8's excellent anodized aluminium unibody, the attention to detail that HTC has put into the Incredible S is remarkable nonetheless.

Unboxing and Introduction

The phone supports PC charging through the micro-USB cable, HTC also throws in a wall-socket-to-USB adapter for the times when you don't have access to a PC. The supplied headset sticks to tradition with its ugly looks and lacklustre sound quality. Since the phone has only 1GB of internal memory, the retail package mercifully includes an 8 GB microSD card. A rubberised plastic construction provides a comfortable grip over the device. It is good to see HTC experiment with the body material, instead of replicating the design cues of phones such as iPhone and Samsung Galaxy series. The back-cover protrudes along the outline of the battery, but instead of forming a rectangle, it assumes the shape of a SIM card.

The phone has dimensions of 120 x 64 x 11.7 mm and weighs 135.5 g. The Incredible S sports a 4" S-LCD display, which is nothing short of spectacular. The panel has pixel dimensions of 480x800. Despite being an LCD, the display is as good as any fancy AMOLED or Super-AMOLED display. It delivers vivid colours with great contrasts and maintains definition even over acute viewing angles. Sadly, the display tends to reflect light. Even though the text remains readable, the colours seem to fade out under the sun.

Just below the display are four capacitive keys - Home, Menu, Back, and Search. Being capacitive, the keys won't react to anything but your finger. The placement of these keys and the backlight goes perfectly with the display. These capacitive keys even auto-rotate along with it; while that adds nothing to functionality, it looks damn good.

A lock/power button and a 3.5 mm jack reside at the top edge. The volume rocker on the left edge of the phone is flanked by a bare micro-USB port. The right edge has nothing, where a camera key is conspicuous by its absence. Not only does it rob one of the pleasures of using the phone like a standalone camera, but it prevents one-touch-triggering of the autofocus feature. The rear bears a relatively large lens with dual-LED flash and a loudspeaker grille.

The battery cover is easy to release, as long as you can pry it open with your fingernails. It reveals a SIM Card and a MicroSD memory card slot. The bundled 8GB memory card isn't sufficient to hold a good collection of music and movies. A miserly 1 GB internal memory doesn't help matters either. That's a shame when the market is rife with the likes of Nokia N8 and Samsung Galaxy S - both of which boast of 16 GB internal storage. A gigabyte will never be sufficient, considering the number of Android apps available - most of which will be installed to the internal memory.

The website is now customised for mobile screens and GPRS-enabled mobile users can now search for properties to buy or rent based on property type, budget, city, locality, bedrooms and property ownership. They can also view details of interesting property listings from their cell phones.

The website offers a tabbed browsing interface so users can refine the results with a single click. It also has a locality-based price-trends feature “QonQ” that is now accessible on the mobile. Bharti Airtel, Aircel To Launch iPhone 4 In India Soon

Two telecommunication service providers said that they will launch Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) iPhone 4 smartphones in India in coming months as mobile telecom companies start rolling out third-generation services.

Bharti Airtel Ltd. and Aircel Ltd. separately announced their plans to launch the phone, but both declined to say when would they launch the most-recent iPhone version and at what price.

Apple didn't offer any immediate comment.

Sales of smartphones like iPhone, which is popular for its high-speed Internet and mobile software capabilities, are expected to get a boost in India as telecom companies are rolling out 3G services that offer high-speed data transfer capabilities.

With more than 790 million subscribers, India is the second-largest market after China for telecom services. It is also the fastest-growing market.

India's mobile handsets market is expected to grow 25% to 210 million units in 2011, according to market research firm CyberMedia Research, which expects smartphones to account for 5.7% of the total handset sales in 2011 compared with 3.6% last year.

Bharti, which already sells earlier models of iPhone, has so far added 2 million users to its 3G mobile telephone network, which it launched in January.

The company, India's largest mobile phone operator by subscribers, has bandwidth to offer 3G services in 13 of the country's 22 telecom service areas.

Aircel, which has more than 50 million subscribers on its second-generation network, started providing 3G services in February. It also has bandwidth to offer 3G telecom services in 13 areas.

Malaysia's Maxis Communications Bhd. holds a 74% stake in Aircel, while India's Apollo Hospitals group owns the rest.

Apple's iPhone 4 was first released in the U.S. and four other countries in June last year, with a starting price of $199.

Last June, Vodafone Essar Ltd., the Indian unit of the U.K.'s Vodafone Group PLC, had said would launch iPhone 4 in India, but didn't say by when.

Aircel Launches 3G Services in India

India is mobile number portable now

Dump your phone company. Move to a better one. But keep your present number. 700 million Indians use cell phones. With mobile number portability finally kicking, many customers, especially pre-paid ones, might abandon ship and firms might offer better service.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday launched nationwide mobile number portability (MNP), a move that will allow users to switch operators without losing their phone numbers.

To shift, send an SMS from your phone to 1900. Your present company will reply with a unique porting code. Use that code while filling out a detailed form for the company you want to shift to. Within 48 hours, that company will take over all your cell services.

Your cell number will be switched off for only one hour. All bills after that, are paid to your new company. You'll be stuck with them for at least 50 days before you can shift again, so choose with care.

While you can shift from a GSM service to CDMA or vice versa, you cannot shift from one state to another. If you do, roaming kicks in, just like it does right now.

You can use number portability for any post-paid as well as prepaid number. In case of a post-paid number, there shouldn't be any dues. For a prepaid number, carry forward of any balance to the new service provider is not permitted.

Customers will have to pay a maximum of Rs 19 to an operator to change their network and the new operator has the option to either waive the fee or reduce it.

Mobile number portability will compel the operators to improve the quality of their mobile services, as they would not like to lose their customers to rivals.

When you port your number, you also need to change your SIM. Apart from retaining the same number, the process is same as acquiring a new connection. MNP might be kicking off all over India now.

MNP services were first launched in Haryana in November last year. Nevertheless, companies like Idea Cellular and Vodafone started marketing the service to subscribers in other parts of the country even before the nationwide roll-out took place.

Idea Cellular, which started the 'No idea? Get Idea' campaign to woo subscribers of rival telcos, has also set up a toll-free line to assist customers looking to switch operators.

More operators are expected to undertake similar activities to maintain their user base, with competition likely to heat up following the nationwide roll-out of MNP services as telcos look to poach their rivals' subscribers.

So will MNP be a game changer? Not that much, since lots of people now also have an option of buying a dual sim phone. But, if Haryana is any indication MNP seems to have a bright future.

Google says no to voice facility launch in India

A couple of months after internet search engine Google launched Google Voice-its service allowing internet to mobile phone calls, the company today said the service could not be launched in India due to legal constraints.

“While India is a key market for us, product-wise, and despite the fact that Google Voice is slated to be an important part of our portfolio, we will not launch it here, because of restrictions laid by law,” said Vinay Goel, head of products, Google India.

According to Clause 1(14) of the revised license scheme of internet telephony services launched by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), voice over internet calls are allowed in three situation:

First, if the calls emanate from a personal computer (PC) in India to a PC outside the country; second, where a PC in India is used to call a telephone outside India; and third, from an IP-based H.323/SIP Terminal in India to similar terminals in India and abroad.

This means that while users would be allowed to call telephones outside the country, calling telephone users within India is a problem.

“So, while launching the service is legal, and acceptable, at best it would be a half-service because users would not be allowed to make PC to telephone calls within the country. We do not see any justification in launching a half-service,” Goel said.

Google eyes mobile internet users

On the back of a three-fold growth in internet users in India and the growing smart phone market, Google has set its sight on mobile phone internet users. “Going forward in the Indian market, Google will increasingly customise products to suit users on mobile phones. We have, for example, customised Google Instant as a phone application,” Goel said.

According to the company’s assessments, the primary factors driving growth of mobile internet users would be the fact that India boasts of some of the cheapest internet data plans across the world. Added to this, increasing SmartPhone penetration especially with the arrival of the sub-10, 000 category would boost the market as well.

“India currently has about 100 million internet users, about 10 per cent of the overall population, which means there is a huge unexplored market,” Goel said.

Global PC maker Dell on Wednesday launched two new 3G handsets in the Indian marketStreak' last month. The streak is priced at Rs 35,990.
The 3G phones launched by Dell are in the 'XCD' series and run on Android 2.1 OS. It features 2.8 ich touch screen, a 3.5 megapixel camera, and all other standard features available in a typical 3G smartphone.
“This XCD range (of smartphones) has been launched first in India, as opposed to other Dell products that peter down to Indian markets,” Dell's General Manager for Consumer and SMB division Mahesh Bhalla said.
The company is planning to give a tough fight to traditional phone makers like Nokia, Samsung etc in the Indian turf with its range of mobile phones.
However, it would be surprising to find out why a customer would go for a Dell branded 3G phone instead of going for popular brands like Nokia, LG, Samsung or Motorola. These passes will allow them to bypass the credit-card entry section on the AppHub website and they will directly be able to register to sell their products through Marketplace to Windows Phone 7 users around the world.

People who want to attend Unpluggd, though, need to register to do so. Microsoft, along with various phone manufacturers, will also showcase some of the smartphones that run on the new operating system.

Windows Phone 7 prices in India will be key to success

What has kickstarted the Android market in India are the super-cheap Android phones. Nowadays, for pretty much the price of a top feature-phone, you could pick up an Android device in India. iPhones, even the last generation 3GS models, cost above Rs 30,000 here. It is no contest, then.

But Microsoft is likely to face its first hurdle here. Windows Phone cell phones have high-end specifications, so how will they keep prices low to make them popular in India?

This will be a touch challenge for Microsoft, for sure. If they price them similar to how they would priced in US without contracts, they would be at the very top of the smartphone market in India – and sell very few units. Are Microsoft’s amibtions for Windows Phone 7 in India so limited?

Or, they could try and do what Apple may be planning – introduce phones on contract. Yes, rumors are that CDMA iPhones would come to Tata and Reliance on contract. This would ensure that initial prices remain low, while the buyer is bound by a one or two year contract.

That, definitely, is one way out for Microsoft. The alternative would be to limit themselves to the top-end of the market, and price their Windows Phone 7 smartphones out of almost everybody’s reach. Well, all we have to do is to wait for the actual launch!
Windows Phone 7 mobile phones for India: Which of these would be launched?

These WP7 phones haven’t yet been announced for the Indian market, though quite a few of them are slated for international launch – including in the US. The new Windows Phone 7 cell phones launched in the US, which are likely to cost typically around $200, include:

HTC HD7
HTC’s HD7 is a Windows Phone 7 smartphone available with T-Mobile in the US, O2 in the UK and Telstra in Australia. The phone will be available around mid November in the US and a little before that in Europe.

The HD7 has a 4.3-inch WVGA TFT screen that offers a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. It is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8250 chipset, and gives you 576MB of RAM. The device comes with a 5-megapixel camera. The phone is rather similar to the HD2, albeit with the ability to record 720p high definition video at 24 frames per second. The phone has 16GB of memory, and offers built-in apps for Netflix, T-Mobile TV, etc.

HTC has a major presence in India, and now have a wide range of Android phones. They might decide to bring this excellent Windows Phone 7 device to India.

HTC Surround
HTC Surround is yet another Windows Phone 7 device, which is available with AT&T in the US and Telus in Canada. In the US, it will cost about $200 with goodies and a two-year contract.

The phone has some interesting hardware features such as a kickstand and a speaker that slides out from under the device. The Surround sports a 3.8-inch WVGA display and has a similar processor from Snapdragon as the HD7. The phone is different from the HD7 because it offers Dolby Mobile and SRS surround sound. So, this might be the one handset for audiophiles looking for great music capability on the move.

Music aficionados in India would be thrilled if Microsoft launches this smartphone in India.

HTC Mozart and 7 Trophy
The HTC Mozart and 7 Trophy will be out in October. These two Windows 7 devices are very similar to the HTC Surround and HD7. The Mozart has a 3.7-inch display and an 8-megapixel camera with xenon flash, while the Trophy offers you a 5-megapixel camera and is going to be the cheapest WP7 phone from HTC (or, so the company says).

HTC 7 Trophy will be available in the UK on Vodafone’s network, while the Mozart will be sold through Orange in the UK and some other European markets. Neither handset is slated for release in the US though.

HTC 7 Pro
The HTC 7 Pro will be available through Sprint in the US early next year. The phone has a tilting screen. Its touchscreen slides back and snaps into place so that the device takes the form of a mini laptop. It has a five-row QWERTY keyboard in landscape format.

Dell Venue Pro
Dell’s Venue Pro runs Windows Phone 7. It will be available from T-Mobile in the US this holiday season. Expect a 4.1-inch touchscreen that displays a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. You will also find a 5-megapixel HD camera. The phone has a QWERTY keyboard, but in portrait format so you can hold the handset and type with one hand. The Venue Pro, in all likelihoods, will be the first of many WP7 devices to be made by Dell. The company hasn’t yet revealed how much the phone will cost.

LG Quantum and Optimus 7
LG, too, has entered the Windows Phone 7 market with its Quantum device for the US and Optimus 7 for Europe and the rest of the world. The Quantum will be available in the US with AT&T for $200.

The two phones have the usual Windows Phone 7 features – 1GHz chip, 8 or 16GB memory, a 5-megapixel camera, HD video recording and playing capabilities, etc.
The Optimus is meant for entertainment, while Quantum is for business users. The key feature of these phones is apparently their ability to transfer media to computers, HD TVs and other devices nearby.

Samsung Cetus
Finally, we have Samsung’s Cetus smartphone, which recently debuted on – guess what? – Windows Phone 7 OS. It seems that the South Korean consumer electronics company has renamed the Cetus to Samsung Focus and has also launched the Omnia 7. The Focus has a 4-inch WVGA screen and gives you the usual Windows Phone 7 specs. It will be available with AT&T in the US, while the Omnia 7 will be available in Europe with T-Mobile, Orange, SFR and Movistar.

Nokia announced new additions to its Symbian^3 family of devices at the ongoing Nokia World in London. The announcement of the three new models takes the Symbian^3 device count to four.

Joining the Nokia N8, announced in April this year, are the Nokia E7 and two new entrants to the C series - C6-01 and C7.

The Nokia E7 is a business device boasts of a 4-inch touchscreen display and a slide out four-row keyboard. The E7 comes with an 8 megapixel camera and 16GB of on-board storage. The device is able to shoot and edit 720p video.

10 New AKAI Mobile Phones Launched in India

AKAI, one of the largest Japanese Consumer Electronics brands with an extensive presence in India announced its entry into the Mobile Handset segment in India with the launch of 10 exciting new models in the dual SIM (GSM+GSM) category. In the basic models, the company has offered features like a Dual Sim, long-lasting battery and large high resolution QVGA screen, while the high-end models include a full touch 3-D user interface, wi-fi, wireless FM with recording, compatibility with social networking sites and e-book compatibility.

The company will launch 3G models by the end of this year, Dhabhai said, adding that its handsets are undergoing trials.

On sales of the company's headsets, Dhabhai said, "Sales from next month, that is, October, are expected to be a lakh per month and by the end of first year of our operations, we expect to have 3 per cent of the total mobile market share."

Akai will make a significant initial investment for setting up the back-end infrastructure for its mobile models and will set up a Level 4 service centre in Gurgaon for repairing mobiles.

"In Gurgaon, we are looking for a centre to repair mobile chip with an investment of about Rs. 5 crore to Rs. 10 crore. It is in the planning stage. By early next year." Dhabhai added.

The company sees after-service as an area that is not focused on by local brands and has invested heavily in setting up a complete service network across India.

The company has 465 service centres across the length and breadth of the country, of which 218 service centres are dedicated for mobile phone back-up services, right from basic servicing to component level repairs.

Since malware authors are always out to make money and want the biggest bang for their buck, the number of attacks designed to exploit a certain device or platform is often directly related to the market share it commands.

With more than 600 million mobile subscribers, and mobile device sales in India forecast to reach 138.6 million in 2010 (according to Gartner), Indian mobile users have become the ideal target base for spammers, and virus and malware writers. “Smartphones are going to pose a greater security risk to corporations as these phones have access to corporate networks in real time just in the same manner as laptops. This presents hackers and cyber criminals with a wider opportunity to use smartphones to compromise corporate network and access sensitive data,” says Kailash Katkar, MD and CEO, Quick Heal Technologies.

The data loss a mobile virus can cause is as critical as a PC virus.

According to an internal study by Google, of about 600 million mobile phone users in India, around 25 million have paid for their data accounts while 55-65 million currently use the free data services provided by the wireless operator. The number of users with data services is estimated to reach around 100 million by the end of this year.

There have been more than 300 Apple iPhone vulnerabilities to date and around a dozen on the Google’s Android platform. Symantec maintains that while there hasn’t been a massive surge in mobile security threats, the situation can change in near future. As mobile apps (small programmes for devices), some of which are created by novice programmers using tools such as Google’s new App Inventor for Android, flood the market, security experts claim the security integrity of mobile devices could be affected.

In April, F-Secure Labs had reported about a malicious code inside a Windows mobile game that led to significant phone bills for users of Windows smartphones. Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at F-Secure, notes: “A Russian malware author manipulated a game called 3D Anti-terrorist action, developed by a Beijing-based software company. The malware author trojanised the game and uploaded it to several Windows Mobile freeware download sites.” The malicious code, in turn, initiates phone calls to international premium-rate numbers, without any action or intention by the user. The case is similar to Cabir, a Symbian worm, which came in focus six years back, when it started spreading on handsets over Bluetooth, causing mobile phones to place long-distance calls.

SMSes, too, have been under attack. “SMS attacks or ‘Smishing’ is an attack that comes through an SMS onto a smartphone and is a mobile phone variant of a phishing attack. Much like a phishing attack, where an email is used to trick the user, in a smishing attack, it is a fraud SMS that is used as bait. The SMS comes with a link, clicking on which causes the Trojan to be installed on the mobile phone,” explains Shantanu Ghosh, VP, India product operations, Symantec.

Quick Heal, which claims to have over 30 per cent market share in the Indian anti-virus market, recently launched a new anti-virus solution called PC2MobileScan that could scan and clean mobile phones and smartphones.

At present, Quick Heal’s PC2MobileScan supports more than 550 mobile phone models, including Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Motorola, H-P, HTC and Siemens. Besides, security software makers like McAfee, F-Secure, Symantec, Trend Micro and Websense offer mobile security solutions that can quarantine viruses in real-time, besides on-demand scanning and auto-updating capabilities.

Venu Palakirti, country manager (India and Saarc), F-Secure underlines: “Even as virus writers increasingly target smartphones, too many people have smartphones with no security at all. People must understand that mobile security is just as critical as it is for desktops or laptops.”

Spice to bring mobile phone with push-mail service

B K Modi promoted telecom company Spice Mobiles is planning to launch an Android powered mobile phone with push-mail service in the Indian market.
"We will be bringing a mobile phone with push-mail service very soon, probably within couple of months," Spice Mobiles CEO Kunal Ahooja told Telenewz.
He further said that the company's aim is not to compete with anyone, rather to offer its customers mobile phones with all possible features at a very affordable price.
The company has recently launched three mobile devices running on Android 2.1 operating system. Among these three devices, Mi-300 and Mi-410 are pure mobile phones and Mi-700 is a 3G ready tablet which also offers voice calls.
Spice Mobiles has recently forged a partnership with US-based chip maker Qualcomm for its Android mobile phones.
The company has set a target of selling 8-10 million Android devices by the end of this fiscal, Ahooja said. Spice Mobiles had sold around 5.5 million mobile devices in the last fiscal, he added.

Google Adds Calls to Gmail, Challenges Skype

Google Inc. unveiled a way for Web users in the U.S. to make calls through its Gmail email service, further pushing into the Internet-calling business and ratcheting up competition with similar services such as Skype.

At an event in San Francisco, Google said the new service, which will roll out this week, is free for calls to the U.S. and Canada at least until the end of the year, though there are costs to make international calls to landlines and mobile phones.

Google said it hoped to later offer the service to international Gmail users and possibly to businesses.

For Google, the move helps drive users to Gmail as well as the potentially to add a feature to its software for businesses, called Google Apps. More than 200 million people currently use Gmail actively, said Todd Jackson, a Google product manager.

The move is Google's latest foray into the telecommunications industry. Two years ago, Google launched a feature that allows Gmail users to do free video chats with other Gmail users. The company has also launched its Android operating system, which powers dozens of mobile phones made by Motorola Inc., HTC Corp. and others. It also backed a Google-branded phone made by HTC Corp., which has been discontinued.

Google's new Web-based calls feature increases its competition with Internet phone providers like Skype SA.

Skype, which is planning an initial public offering, also has a paid service offering low-cost calls to landlines or mobile phones, similar to Google's new plan. Skype, which generated revenue of more than $400 million for the first half of 2010, said only about eight million of its 560 million registered users paid for their service as of June 30.

Skype didn't respond to requests for comment on Google's new offering.

The new feature "complements Google's enterprise applications, especially for small businesses," and it also will keep current Gmail users happy, said Jim Friedland, a Cowen & Co. technology analyst. "This makes sure they stay in the Google sphere of products."

At its event, Google said its PC-to-phone call rates will be cheaper than those of providers of similar services. Gmail calls to landlines in China, France, Spain, Mexico, the U.K. and more than two dozen other countries will cost two cents a minute.

Calls through Gmail to mobile phones internationally will be more expensive, with users paying 18 cents a minute for calls to the U.K. and six cents a minute to India, for example. Google said it hopes to generate enough revenue from the foreign calls to keep domestic and Canada calls free.

Skype charges users about 2.1 cents a minute to make calls to landline and mobile phones in the U.S. and dozens of other countries, according to its website. Skype also sells monthly subscriptions.

Gmail users who have a Google Voice account can also receive inbound calls in Gmail, the company said. Google Voice is a free service that gives callers a new phone number that can be used to ring different real-world phones they own and can send them an email transcript of voicemails they received, among other features.

Time for mobile users to ring in recycling

Do you plan to discard your mobile phone or exchange it for a new one? Then consider this: Old mobile phones constitute 1,700 tonnes of the 50,000 tonnes of e-waste generated in India each year and, according to a UN report released early this year, e-waste from mobile phones is set to rise 18 times by 2020.

E-waste, or electronic waste, implies discarded computers, mobiles, refrigerators or any other electronic appliance at the end of its life. With growing consumerism, discarding e-waste has become a big challenge in the country.

This has spawned a relatively new sector: Organised recycling. As of now, 16 players have sprung into action by re-cycling mobile phones, which also contain precious metals like gold, silver and platinum as well as other metals like copper. Mobile phone and PC makers gobble up three per cent of the world’s entire gold and silver supply each year, not to mention 13 per cent of palladium, 15 per cent of cobalt, and plenty of copper, steel, nickel and aluminum.

Faisal Faraz, marketing manager for e-waste recycling company Greenscape, says, “Almost 90 per cent of e-waste is being recycled by the unorganized sector, which includes small scale garbage collectors. The process they use for extracting precious metals is not only harmful, but also results in the loss of almost 75 per cent of the precious metals.” He reasons that a licensed re-cycler can extract metal waste in an eco-friendly way.

While all parts of a gadget are re-cycled locally, printed circuit boards (PCBs) of mobile phones are exported abroad to smelting companies for metal extraction. Last year alone, Greenscape exported 100 tonnes of PCBs from e-waste (1.3 tonnes from mobile phones) to smelting companies, like Umicore, in Belgium.

Besides precious metals, an average mobile phone contains poisonous substances like lead and mercury, which can pose serious environmental and health hazards if not disposed properly.

The Indian Cellular Association (ICA), which represents the mobile industry, is said to be working on e-waste guidelines. Pankaj Mahendroo, president, ICA, says, “Except for a few vendors there is no massive recycling initiative yet.”

This is the situation in a country where annual mobile sales are forecasted to reach 138.6 million in 2010 — an increase of 18.5 per cent over last year’s sales of 117 million units, according to Gartner data. “Cellular phone penetration in India stood at 45 per cent in 2009 and, now, the market is entering a second growth phase, with replacement sales increasing from 45 per cent in 2009 to 50 per cent of total sales in 2010,” informs Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner.

Major handset makers may have announced a take-back policy that collect old handsets and give them to authorised re-cyclers, but the exercise is clearly lacking momentum as most users are still unaware of such schemes.

According to a Nokia study, awareness in India about recycling was the lowest among all countries surveyed at 17 per cent and 84 per cent of Indians didn’t think about recycling their unwanted phones.

A small beginning was made by Nokia with ‘Planet Ke Rakhwaale’ — a take-back and recycling campaign launched early this year. Under the programme, Nokia encourages consumers to drop their unused mobiles and chargers, irrespective of the brand, into 1,350 recycling bins placed at Nokia Care Centres. As of April, Nokia says it has collected more than 16 tonnes — or more than 500,000 phones and accessories.

Samsung, too, informs that it has an on-going recycling initiative across 216 centres. “We have tied up with a government-authorised recycling agency for recycling old mobiles. The response to this initiative has been encouraging and we plan to shortly extend this take-back programme to our consumer electronics products as well,” says Ranjit Yadav, director, Mobile & IT, Samsung India, without detailing how many mobile phones the company has recycled so far.

Sony Ericsson, while claiming it has a take-back policy for old handsets, remained uncommunicative on details.

Dual-SIM Mobile Phones Gaining Popularity in India

Demand for mobile phones that can accept two SIM (subscriber identity module) cards has picked up strongly in India, but Nokia, the dominant handset vendor in India, is late to the market.

Dual SIM phones currently account roughly for close to about 15 percent of mobile phones sales in the country, and the market is growing fast, said Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner.

Nokia plans to launch its first dual-SIM phone, the Nokia C2, in India in the next few months.

Competitor Samsung said its dual-SIM phones, introduced in the second quarter of last year, will account for 12 to 15 percent of mobile phones sold by the company this year. That's up from about 8 percent of unit sales last year, said Ruchika Batra, a spokeswoman. The company is launching more dual-SIM models this year, she added.

The market is mainly driven by users who want to switch between carriers to take advantage of the best deals, said Gupta. Business and professional users may also use these phones to have a separate mobile number for personal and official calls, he added.

A large number of buyers of Samsung's dual SIM phones use the two SIMs on the phone to switch between network providers if coverage gets patchy, or when they are traveling between cities, Batra said.

The market for dual SIM mobile phones is dominated currently by locally branded phones, and phones from Chinese vendors selling into India, according to Gupta.

Such vendors are providing increasing competition for big-name players like Nokia, which had a 54.1 percent share of the India's 101.54 million-unit mobile phone market in 2009, according to research firm IDC India. The company's share is bound to go down as more vendors enter the Indian market, IDC India said in April.

Indian and Chinese vendors are making inroads at the low end of the Indian mobile phone market by offering a combination of features such as dual SIM, powerful speakerphones and a battery life of up to 30 days, Gupta said. These vendors have stripped some features, like the camera and Wi-Fi, from mobile phones to lower costs, and instead focused on features like long battery life which are so critical in rural markets, he added.

India had 617.5 million [m] mobile subscribers at the end of May, according to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

The mid-market mobile phone user segment has started moving up the value chain. Many of these users want services like broadband data, media content and other value added services.

"The number of people who come just for voice top-up is shrinking. Customers are increasingly looking at comprehensive packages," says Muktambha Prakash, proprietor of Maa Enterprises, a mobile top-up outlet in R T Nagar in Bangalore. Muralidharsa Meharwade, a recharge retailer on M G Road, says pre-paid customers are asking for more voice, data and other services, all bundled. "Earlier, prepaid used to have a low-end connotation, but that's changing," says Meharwade.

Vodafone is offering 50MB of free mobile internet browsing bundled with every prepaid SIM. Data packs include 2GB usage for Rs 95 with a 30 day validity; 200MB for Rs 16 with a 3 day validity. Vodafone is scheduled to launch a slew of new bundled products in the coming weeks.

RCOM launched Buzz comes with a first recharge at Rs 66, with a talk time of Rs 40, one year validity, 500 SMS a day free for a year, and 40% off on GPRS for 12 months. Airtel offers a package at Rs 45, with talk time worth Rs 30, validity of 30 days, and 100 MB free data usage. For a recharge of Rs 109, the customer gets a talk time worth Rs 90 and 100MB free data. Another comes with a Rs 50 recharge, that gives Rs 41 talk time, 10 SMS free for seven days and Radio Mirchi live on mobile for seven days.

"Expect a decline in growth of voice revenue from 2010 by 2014-end, although this will be balanced by increased revenue from data services which will significantly contribute to the overall growth of mobile services in India," says Neha Gupta, senior research analyst in Gartner.

K Sankara Narayanan, CEO of Vodafone Karnataka, says that within three years, more than 50% of its subscribers would use mobile wireless services. "A majority of the new users are accessing the internet for the first time via their mobile phones," he said.

HP Labs India on Thursday announced the launch of ‘SiteonMobile’, a technology to make Internet content and services available to the masses even from low-end mobile phones. It is a new cloud service that enables Internet to be accessed using SMS and voice.

The solution enables portal owners to design mobile applications and extend their reach from 60 million Internet users to more than 600 million mobile phone users. The cloud service developed by the India research team at HP Labs includes a solution for rapid creation of mobile applications.

For users in developing countries, mobile phones are expected to deliver their first Internet experience. However, more than 50 per cent of the phones sold in India are ultra-low-end and less than 3 per cent are Internet enabled. There is a strong need to deliver the value of Internet experiences on low-end devices used by users in emerging markets like India.

‘SiteonMobile’ is a solution to deliver Internet content and services over SMS and Voice to non-tech savvy consumers. The solution enables task-based personal web interactions. Instead of delivering a complete web page to a mobile phone, the solution delivers only the short content relevant to the user’s task. It is built around a concept of TaskLets that represents the interactions for a user’s specific web task. In addition to mobile phones, even those owning the PCs can run TaskLets by clicking the corresponding widgets on their computer screens. Since the TaskLets reside in the cloud they can be accessed from anywhere from any device.

Dell Bets on Smartphone Sales in India

Better late than never. That seems to be Dell’s mantra as it seeks to launch its first smartphone in India – the world’s fastest growing and second-largest mobile phone market – to take on the combined Hewlett-Packard-Palm threat it now faces.

“We will launch a smartphone in India later this year,” Steve Felice, president of Dell’s consumer, small and medium business division, said in a post-earnings conference call with Asian journalists Friday.

Dell will also bring more smartphone models to China in addition to the one launched earlier this year, he added.

The move can’t come too soon.

Rival Hewlett-Packard, which leads Dell in overall PC market share globally as well as in India, agreed to buy Palm Inc. in April this year for about $1.2 billion. H-P is expected to use the acquisition to add smartphone market share to its market leadership of worldwide and Indian PC sales.

In India, sales of mobile phones far outnumber personal computers. For every personal computer sold in India, 80 new mobile phones were sold in the calendar year of 2009, according to statistics by research firm IDC India.

Commercial third-generation bandwidth services are expected to roll out in September, which is likely to boost consumption of data services on smartphones.

Finnish handset maker Nokia had the largest share of 54.1% in terms of units sold in India during calendar year 2009 followed by Korean firms Samsung with a 9.7% share and LG with a 6.4% share, a note by IDC India said.

Though no separate numbers on smartphone sales in India were immediately available, the entry of cheap Indian-branded and Chinese-made copies of Nokia, Blackberry and iPhone smartphones may spoil the party for Dell, H-P and other smartphone makers including Apple.

The mobile phone market has got more crowded and fragmented, said IDC India.

“The rise of ‘copycat’ models that have looks and aesthetics resembling those of high-end smartphones which are often available for as little as one-tenth of the average sales value of a smartphone have led to this,” the research firm added.

Also, price-conscious consumers have forced intensely competitive operators to charge a pittance for voice calls, so it is still difficult to sell unlimited data plans, none of which cost less than $20 dollars a month.

Despite this, the need of the average Indian to access information and use services like learning English or booking train tickets on mobile phones should help Dell in its smartphone venture eventually.

In doing so, cellphone makers are attempting to lure buyers of high-end GPRS handsets, which operate on the 2G spectrum. Phones operating on the 3G airwaves, which are up for auction, offer faster data downloads and high-quality video streaming.

“Even before 3G auctions are complete, we have seen significant demand for handsets,” says Jeff Taylor, co-founder, INQ Mobiles.

Nearly 20% of India’s 550 million cellphone subscribers possess high-end GPRS handsets, which are priced between Rs 2,500 and Rs 35,000.

Nokia is offering a 3G phone (model: 2730) from Rs 4,119 onwards, while Sony Ericsson’s phone begins at the Rs 6,000 price-point. At the higher end, Blackberry’s 3G model is priced upwards of Rs 17,000 while Apple’s iPhone 3G is priced at over Rs 30,000.

Mobile phone manufacturers are expecting the spectrum auctions to shake up the Rs 35,000-crore market, which operates on wafer-thin margins of 1-2%.

Value-added service players are also eyeing gains from the launch of TV serials or comedy clips on mobiles. Second-largest player Samsung has one of the largest cellphone line-ups with 13 models and plans to launch up to seven more in the next six months.

“India is a technology-adaptive market, and thus the new launches,” says Ranjeet Yadav, head of Samsung’s IT division.

Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai are the largest markets for high-end phones. The Capital alone sees 20% of sales for phones costing over Rs 10,000 in India. “Pricing of handsets will not be a problem as most handsets are already quite affordable,” says Sudhin Mathur, head of LG’s India mobile division. LG has about five 3G handsets and plans to introduce up to 10.

Surfing, emailing and downloading of applications will be the most sought-after features on the new handsets, says Mr Taylor of INQ Mobile, which entered the Indian market just two months ago with Aircel.

The company has two handsets in the Indian market, both of which are 3G-enabled. It is planning to come out with altogether five handsets in the mid-market price segment of below Rs 8,000, he says.

Htc Legend – Vodafone Gets The New Htc Android Phone

HTC have now released their upgrade handset to the Hero which is also known as the Touch G2 on T-Mobile, the new HTC Legend takes on a very similar design but incorporates some new technology and features not found in the original model.

The manufacture of the HTC Legend is also different to that of the Hero handset and closely resembles the recently released Google Nexus One (which is also manufactured by HTC) in as much as both phones are moulded from one piece of aluminium for extra robustness and strength.

The Legend handset has been released alongside the new HTC Desire as a more compact phone using the original dimensions of the Hero’s touch screen at 3.2 inches. This seems to be pretty standard with many manufacturers such as the Sony Ericsson Vivaz, Nokia X6 and Motorola Milestone.

Microsoft Launches iPhone Competitor, 'Kin'

Teaming up with HTC Corp., Samsung Electronics Co., Sharp, and other mobile makers, Microsoft unveiled a line of mobile phones geared toward teens and young adults, attempting to capture market share with its social-networking focus.

Microsoft is trying to mark its territory in the mobile phone market, as well as diversifying its product line-up into an explosive market. Historically, Microsoft has been a software provider in the wireless industry to different handset makers, however, it has been losing ground with the launch of Apple’s iPhone and Google Inc.’s Android platform.

“Kin is an interesting attempt to target the 15 to 25 market,” said Ross Rubin, consumer electronics and wireless industry analyst at market research firm NPD Group in an interview with Reuters.

Rubin believes that the success of the software giant’s phones will hinge on the pricing of its data plans, which is yet to be announced. Microsoft spokeswoman Melissa Havel has opted not to comment or release details about the pricing of the phones.

The phones have been branded as Kin One and Kin Two, produced by Japan’s Sharp Corp. and sold by Verizon Wireless, based in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc. and U.K.-based Vodafone Group Plc.

Microsoft President Robbie Bach, who leads the mobile-phone division, launched the phones on April 12 at an event in San Francisco.

“We said, ‘Look, there’s a segment here that we can really go after deeply,” Bach said on Monday in an interview with Bloomberg TV. “And once you decide to go deep, you can’t go part way and say we’ll do the software and then we’ll hand it off to somebody else. You have to really be involved in the whole process.”

The new phones will be sold in May in the United States, and subsequently Europe in the last quarter of the year—on Vodafone’s European network.

According to the vice president of Microsoft’s mobile communications marketing group, there are possibilities of it developing hardware for other parts of the market in the future. However, Bach has reiterated that the company prefers to work with handset producers that create their own hardware.

“This isn’t a Microsoft product,” said Robbie Bach. “Sharp is not just the manufacturer, they sell the phones to Vodafone, not Microsoft. This is a very traditional model, it’s just that we were more involved in the design and the hardware with Sharp.”

Sales of data plans at Verizon Wireless rose 46 percent in the fourth quarter, contributing almost a third of the company’s wireless-service revenues.

The target demographic is clearly focused on those who are savvy with social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace.

Nokia Corp. launched three less-expensive smart phones, including its first model expected to sell for under euro100 ($135) — in a strong move to grab new customers in emerging markets.

The world's largest mobile phone maker said it wants "to put better messaging and social networking tools in the hands of more people around the world at affordable prices."

The new Nokia C3, Nokia E5 and Nokia C6 handsets have full QWERTY keyboards, enable instant messaging and give access to e-mails. Their expected selling prices respectively are euro90, euro180 and euro220 before taxes and subsidies.

The handsets will be available during the second and third quarters of this year.

"Nokia's strategic focus is clearly on emerging markets now and taking higher feature devices to the masses and these three devices do that quite nicely," said Neil Mawston, analyst at Strategy Analytics in London.

Finland-based Nokia, which is increasingly turning to providing applications and services for handset users, said in December it will focus on the smart phone sector, including providing cheaper handsets in emerging markets.

Despite strong competition from Blackberry and iPhone, Nokia's market share in smart phones grew from 35 percent to 40 percent in the last quarter of 2009.

The cheapest of the new models, the C3, with an estimated price tag of euro90, includes a two megapixel camera, a 2.4 inch screen and will include access to Nokia's Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat that allow first-time users to set up e-mail and chat accounts straight from the device without the need for a computer.

It has WiFi connectivity and support for up to an 8GB memory card, allowing users to update their status and share pictures on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

"The C3 stands out the most at a very competitive price with a very effective feature set ... that goes squarely after the lower-tier mass market in India, Africa, China," Mawston said. "It's going to be one of their star devices over the next two quarters."

The Nokia C6, with an estimated price of euro220, has a 3.2-inch touch screen with full slide-out keyboard and a five megapixel camera featuring autofocus and flash.

The E5, expected to sell for some euro180, is targeted at corporate customers with numerous productivity applications available in Nokia's Ovi Store. It has direct access to over 90 percent of the world's corporate e-mails through Mail for Exchange and IBM Lotus Notes Traveler.

Nokia's share price was virtually unchanged at euro11.18 ($15.19) in early afternoon trading in Helsinki.

LG, Motorola Launches Android Phone in India

Google’s mobile operating system Android is catching up with major handset makers with Korea’s LG Mobiles and US’s Motorola announcing the launch of Android phones in the Indian market.

While LG’s ‘LG GW620’ is priced at Rs 16,490, Motorola’s smartphone ‘Milestone’ would be available at Rs 32,990 based on Android systems. Currently, Symbian mobile operating system is the dominating network.

Android is a mobile operating system, initially developed by Google and later by the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 47 hardware, software and telecom companies.

Being an open-source operating system, Android allows developers to design applications independent of the handset type.

HTC, Samsung and Sony Ericsson have already launched their Android-powered handsets in the Indian market.

LG GW620, with the Android operating system, is equipped with three-inch touch-screen and a side-slider QWERTY keyboard, five-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and high speed EDGE and GPS connectivity.

“LG’s first Android phone, LG GW620, further reiterates our commitment to push boundaries in mobile phone innovation and design. We are sure that with LG’s accumulated technology leadership in mobile phone industry and our strategy to support every existing operating system, LG will provide better choices and benefits to our consumers,” LG Mobile Communications Business Head Sudhin Mathur said in a statement.

Sony Ericsson’s new portfolio of phones was unveiled by Kareena Kapoor, its newly appointed brand ambassador for the region. The phones include the much awaited XPERIA X10, XPERIA X10 mini, XPERIA X10 mini pro, Vivaz and Vivaz pro.

The mobile apps revolution is here. Market research firm Gartner estimates that this year alone, mobile users across the globe will pay more than $6.2 billion to buy 'mobile applications' -- games, social networking tools, productivity and entertainment-based mini programmes for mobile phones.

And this despite the fact that 80 per cent of these will be free downloads anyway this year.

Apps have become the business with the fastest turnaround time in the software industry. In just one month an application can be developed and marketed to a global community of enthusiastic downloaders.

Sample this. In January this year, 3 billion apps were downloaded from the Apple app store, which has more than 100,000 titles in categories such as games, business, news, sports and health.

BlackBerry App World has around 4,000 titles and Google's Android Market, 20,000.

Little wonder, then, that mobile app developers, a non-existent breed just five years ago, are crawling out of the woodwork. Students, teachers, even doctors have jumped into the fray, competing with career software professionals.

In India, the world's second biggest mobile phone market of more than 500 million consumers and a large community of software programmers, there is fierce competition among developers to deliver apps that run on different handsets and technology platforms.

What's driving their business are online app stores on the Apple, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson websites, and on Facebook and Orkut, where developers can sell directly to consumers. Of course, they must pay a yearly fee and 30 per cent of their revenues to the service platform.

But this is a better scenario -- there was a time when app developers earned a paltry 10-15 per cent as royalty from mobile service providers.
